Reducing the cost of sickness absence
In today's increasingly competitive environment, employers need ways to reduce the cost of employee sickness absence, promote health and wellbeing and enhance retention packages for their top talent.
On average sickness absence costs employers over £600 per employee per year (CIPD Absence and Management Survey, 2010). This equates to 8 working days, or 3.5% of working time. The main causes of sickness absence are minor illnesses such as colds, flu, stomach upsets and headaches. By developing a healthy culture and adopting a systematic approach to occupational health employers can greatly reduce the amount of sickness absence.
More than Private Medical Insurance (PMI)
PMI costs, on average, over £700 per employee per annum (Laing & Buisson, July 2007). It is considered a key benefit because it is seen as high worth by employees and also reduces long-term sickness absence. However, if most absence is short-term, how cost-effective is it for the employer?
Ease of access to a GP has a major impact on the day to day running of a business.
