We are members of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), and recently found it had produced a Survey from nearly 4000 FSB Members in 2006 called Health Matters. We thought you may be interested in its findings, especially those of you who, like us, run your own business.
The 2006 Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD) survey on Absence Management estimated that sickness absence costs employers £598 per employee per year and represents 3.5% of working time.
The 2006 FSB Survey found that, although levels of absence in small businesses tend to be less, the pressures of covering for staff absence are significantly greater, as the workload is spread between a smaller team.
Business owners feel under pressure to continue to work through sickness, as they feel they can’t take the time out of the business and so ‘just get on with it.’
One of the key recommendations from the FSB Report is that employers promote healthy workplaces and provide occupational health support to their staff.
Occupational Health is often seen as Private Health Insurance – ie. specialist care in private hospitals. However more often than not it is access to Primary Care (ie. the GP) that is most crucial to a business and its employees. This is why we offer Corporate Services.
We offer a range of services, suitable for all sizes of business, including VIP Memberships, surgery consultations at a reduced rate for all (or selected) employees. The business owners then have the peace of mind that both they and their staff will have rapid access to a GP, even outside working hours, so minimizing the impact on the working day.
A few of our larger corporate clients also hold a monthly on-site clinic. One of our Doctors attends and any employees who have a medical problem can make an appointment. This deals with any niggling matters right at the place of work, so the employee only misses 15 minutes or so.
If you run a business or think the services we can offer would be of interest to your employer, please email Kate Dukes on kate.dukes@doctornow.org.
